Company after company has introduced unmanned platforms, but as one analyst said, the Navy "just has not given the indication that they are buying these at scale."
The policy imposes extensive safeguards on a host of AI applications, from intelligence reports and collateral damage assessments to cyber warfare and nuclear strikes.
The MQ-9B and Gambit Series represent parallel capabilities that address global challenges for security head-on.
“The most important things that we do in Pillar II of AUKUS haven't been invented yet,” Michael Horowitz, whose office serves as the Pentagon's day-to-day lead on AUKUS issues, told Breaking Defense in an exclusive interview.
“Each of the services nominated capabilities for consideration in the selection process, based on a warfighter-centric set of criteria,” a Pentagon spokesman told Breaking Defense.
“I think that there’s a recognition that the sorts of norms we’re trying to promote are things that all countries should be able to get behind,” Pentagon emerging capabilities official Michael Horowitz said.
“I think one of… the things we sought to accomplish in the course of the update is clarifying the language to ensure a common understanding both inside and outside the Pentagon of what the directive says,” said Michael Horowitz, director of the Pentagon’s Emerging Capabilities Policy Office.
As threats evolve, the winning model ties digital engineering to manufacturing capacity and a reindustrialized supply chain.
"We want to make sure, of course, that the directive still reflects the views of the department and the way the department should be thinking about [autonomous] weapon systems,” Michael Horowitz told Breaking Defense in an exclusive interview.
"This has to include thinking about issues surrounding the… ethical questions, strategic stability questions associated with emerging technologies because doing that reflects our norms, reflects our values,” Michael Horowitz said.
